Why Should You Use A Dog Crate?

There are many reasons why you should use dog crates but below we have narrowed down the most common reasons people decide to use a dog crate. People want their dogs to be protected and we also want our animals to feel comfortable; a dog crate provides this for us and our dogs. These are our reasons why you should crate train a dog:

The first one Is that the crate will make your dog have a feeling of safety.  Dogs always even in the house will need a spot where they know they are safe! There can be many of these spots. I’m sure that one of their safe spots in next to you. You can also make the dog crate feel like a safe space for your dog.  The crate can make the dog relaxed after they get used to it. They can get away from the kids or people chasing them around and just have some peace and quiet time while you are away.

The dog crate will also benefit you in the long run as well. Just like we said the crate will provide safety for your dog well it will keep them away from stuff that you don’t want them to mess with. This will be very helpful during those puppy years! You wouldn’t want your dog to play with something or chew on something harmful to them.  If they are in their dog crate these thing can’t happen!

House Training:

Dogs have a natural instinct to keep their area clean or house clean. Their crate can be thought of as their den or mini house. If you keep your puppy in the dog crate for short periods of time they can try and hold their bladder. Then when you come back take them outside to let them use the bathroom. In other words this process is used to help speed up the potty training process. If you practice and repeat this enough it will become second nature to them and you will have less accidents.

Car Travel:

We all know car rides can be stressful to dogs. It’s not safe to have your dog loose in the car because it can not only freak your dog out but it could be distracting to your driving. The crate can cure these problems. If your dog is used to their crate which is their safe space it should make it less stressful for you and your dog. Being in that stress free place will not cause fear when taking a car ride to a new place.  Also plane rides; they will be comfortable to a point because they are used to their crate.

This can be a difficult time for any dog if you have to leave and have them boarded. A way to make boarding easy on the employees and the dog will be to have them used to their dog crate.  This experience will help them with being comfortable being crated in a small space. At some point in your dog’s life they will probably need to be boarded at least once so make sure you have them properly trained for that time.

Just like children pets need go into timeout too for a short period of time. A timeout for a dog could be when they chew or make a mess of sometime or even just getting to excited to see someone so they need a break to calm down. Don’t punish your dog while in the dog crate because this will make them hate it. Just a one to two minute time out should be sufficient enough. If they are crated properly it will be a happy experience for them to go in there.

Types of Dog Crates You Can Buy:

There are different styles of dog crates out there but there are four most known dog crates. They are the wire crates, plastic crates, soft dog crates, and the decorative or furniture dog crates. The dog crate you choose will have to depend on how much space you have, how destructive your dog is, and personal preference.

Wire Dog Crates:

These types of dog crates are the most commonly used dog crates, one because they are affordable and you can buy these at any store. Usually when you talk to someone about dog crates this is the first thing that pops in their head is a wire dog crate.

Some pros of this type of crate are they allow for a great ventilation system for your dog keeping air flowing in through all directions. Very easy to clean because all you have to do is wipe the bottom. Some come with dividers so you can keep a smaller space for your dog when it’s a puppy. Also some models can fold but not all of them will. These crates are usually very sturdy and will keep the destruction of your dog at a low chance.

There are also some disadvantages to think about when getting a wire crate. Some dogs can lash out with bad behavior because they feel over exposed and not in a safe shelter. Wire crates are also the nosiest crates because if your dog makes a move the crate gives off the sound in an echo form. Some dogs can becomes escape artists in these types of crates meaning that if your dog is smart they could possibly get out of the cage. Also these crates can be extremely heavy which is a big disadvantage.

Plastic Dog Crates:

The plastic dog crates are the best used if you need to transport your dog somewhere. This is good for car travel, train travel, and even plane travel. This type of crate is very secure for transporting any pet you can think of.

Plastic dog crates have some great pros like the crate itself gives your dog way more shelter than a wire crate where they can feel more protected. The plastic crate is also a lot lighter then wire crates of course and they will usually come with a plastic handle so it is easy to carry with you. If your do gets distracted by other dogs or things easily this crate will be better for you because it is less visibility meaning they will have a private space where they don’t have to be stressed with everything around them. Most of the plastic crates you buy on the market are airline approved! And lastly of course the plastic crates are much more difficult for those little escape artists to escape from.

Like everything there are disadvantages of having a plastic crate. Sometimes these types of crate are very stressful to dogs and cats because they have no idea what is happening. These models are much harder to clean because there is to much ventilation going on so the plastic will keep more odors than some other crates. These crates do not fold at all so you will have to store them somewhere and if you live somewhere will little space like me this can be a pain. Lastly these can get pricey depending on what type of plastic dog crate you are buying.

Soft Dog Crates:

Some people are against using wire and plastic crate because they feel like their putting their dogs in prison. The soft sided crates are like a big bed for your dog. The walls are soft and have steel inside them to keep them supported. This is great for first time crate users to help their dog feel like it’s not a cage.

The pros for the soft sided crates are that they are extremely light and you can take them absolutely anywhere. They can be easily stored anywhere as well because they can fold to almost nothing. These crates a soft and way more comfortable for a dog or cat then a wire or plastic crate. These types of crates are also super awesome for car travel it’s a very comfortable place for your dog while you are driving to your destination.

The biggest disadvantage for this type of crate is that destructive dogs can just rip and chew their way through this crate. Which this means that this crate is not as long lasting as it could be. Another bad thing about this is if you have a puppy and they make an accident in this crate well; it’s made of fabric and steel so the stains will be very hard to get rid of and over time it will just look awful.

Decorative or Furniture Dog Crates:

This is the type of crate for people who hate to look at the regular wire or plastic crates. They want something that can be useful to them and their pet. Usually these they pf crates are made to look like a decretive side table with a nice wooden finish.

The advantages of this type of crate are that they can fit into someone’s style of their living room or dining room without it looking like a dog crate. It can also be used as a side table, book stand, or another type of usable table shelf. You will find many different things in this category all in a number of finishes for you to find what you’re looking for.

Disadvantages of these crates are destructive dogs can really ruin these type of crates with claw marks or scuffs. These crates come at a great cost as they are beautiful but it could hurt your budget. Do not try house training in these crates because any accident will cause water marks or stain that will become permeant to the beautiful wooden crate.

Do You Think it’s Cruel to Crate Your Dog?

This has been a great debate for many years and people are still going over this. Many people judge crates too easily and don’t really know exactly what their purpose is for. Of course there are horrible people out there that keep their dogs in crates all day long but most people will not do that and only do that while they are away for short periods of time. If you give your dog time to anything they become acclimated to it and they will like it. It’s the same with dog crates; in the beginning you are just trying to make your dog comfortable. The dog crate can become a very useful tool to both you and your dog. I have listed those reasons in the first part of this article. So NO to the age old question is it cruel to crate your dog? It is not because you as an owner are not trying to confine your dog to prison; you’re trying to build a relationship between your dog and the crate to give them their own escape and happy place.

How To Use A Dog Crate Properly:

Obviously first you will want to read our list above and pick out one of our recommended crates. Make sure you already have a place in your house cleared and clean ready for your new dog crate. Remember the crate will need to be large enough to reach your dog’s full size to adult dog life. You will want your dog to be able to stretch out comfortably and to be able to lie down in their crate. It’s good to have your accessories already in the crate like a nice soft bed, a favorite chew toy, and some water. Start crate training as soon as you get the crate to get your dog acclimated to a routine in the crate.

Remember if this is your dog’s first time ever being in a crate you do not want to leave them for long periods of time. You will want to have short regular intervals in the crate while you are at home to teach them how the crate works and keep doing this until you have reached your desired length of time gone. If you have children teach them to not go in the crate because this can have a serious effect on training. This is your dog’s personal private space and if your children go in there and mess with it, it can start bad habits for your dog.

As you are doing frequent intervals in the dog crate you should also be doing frequent intervals outside to use the bathroom. This will help your puppy become trained not only in their crate but to help them not have accidents in the house. Especially if you are planning on leaving for a long period of time always take them outside to do their business before you go then right back out when you come home.

Lastly try to keep the dog crate door open at all times when it is not in use. This will allow your dog the right to explore the house but also their crate. If your dog gets scared or just wants a comfortable space all to themselves; they might just wander on in to their crate. This will give them peace and quiet and if they have any hesitations about the crate this will make them feel more at ease.

When To Use The Dog Crate:

Sometimes we get very busy in our lives and we can’t watch or supervise everything we may want to. This is important to think about when you have a small puppy. A puppy is just like a little baby; they need attention, supervision, and love all day long and if you get caught up in everything else that goes on during the day the crate will give your dog some supervision when you cant. Even if you have a young baby in the house maybe you need your dog to chill and have some time to themselves the crate will be a great place for them to go when small children are around this way they don’t get hurt. Lastly if you are another room and you have a small puppy in the chewing stage; the crate can also help with watching that dog so they don’t get bored and destructive if you know what I mean.

The crate is also a great way to manage behavior problems in your dog. For instance if your dog is doing something they shouldn’t be doing like chewing on the furniture or scratching on the furniture you can always put your dog in timeout.  This will just give your dog a few minutes to be by themselves and if you have trained your dog well they should learn from this and correct their behavior. Sometimes guest will come over and your dog may get to excited jumping all around and you need to give them a few minutes in their crate to calm down.

You may find yourself in a situation when you get an addition to your family like a new dog. When you introduce them to each other sometimes you are not sure what to expect. So what we recommend is to out your dog in the crate that they are already used to and then bring the puppy into the room. You can never be sure how your other dog will react so this will give them a calm atmosphere to say hello to each other. Then once your dog has calmed down you can let your dog out and let them interact with each other in a safe environment.

When Not To Use a Dog Crate:

There are certain times when you shouldn’t use your dog crate weather it’s a medical condition or even if their having psychological problems. If your dog is afraid of the dog crate then you should never force them into the crate. You can always tell if a dog is scared by their ears being flat, tail between their legs, and trembling with a little wine then you shouldn’t make them get in the crate. The crate needs to be your dog’s happy place and if you force them in there they will resent it and will always hate the dog crate.

Many dogs already suffer separation anxiety when you leave the house now if you give them the crate and throw them in there it will caused their anxiety level to rise. You can tell if your dog has separation anxiety by looking for signs of destruction around the house. It’s their way of coping with it. Now if you out them in the crate some dogs have been known to break teeth on the metal trying to escape the crate. If your dog is experiencing separation anxiety you should find a professional to talk to about it to figure out what you should do to keep your dog out of danger.

If your dog starts to use the bathroom in their crate for more than just a couple accidents it could be caused by anxiety or sickness. Watch a pattern with your dog because I few accidents could happen because you left them in there too long. If they are constantly having accidents then it could possibly a sickness or a medical reason. If you think that is the case do not confine them to their crate for a while till you find out the reason this is happening from a health professional.

Do not crate your dog longer than five hours because they will just be laying there for five hours without any exercise, interaction, or even being able to urinate. That is a big no you do not want to use your crate for that purpose. You also should not be using this crate as a punishment. A short period timeout is okay but don’t confine them for long periods of time as a punishment. They will start to hate their crate if they are punished in it for longer than a few minutes.

How To Crate Train Your Dog As a Puppy:

So what is the point of crate training your dog as a puppy? Well you will want to teach your dog at an early age that the crate is their special space just for them to get away and relax where only good things happen. Once your dog is used to crate training they will start going in the crate voluntarily. It can take a while depending on how committed you are to train and crate your dog. It could take a week or it could take longer it really just depends on you and what type of personality your dog has. Before you even start this crate training process remember, to get the crate all set up with comfortable things your dog will need. We have talked about it above but remember to buy a bed, water dish, food dish, and a chew toy. Let your puppy get used to the crate for a couple days. Let them walk around it, investigate it, and accept it as a new surrounding in their home. After a few days you can begin this process and start crate training your puppy.

The Plan:

The first thing you are going to want to do is let your puppy explore. This is the very first step in crate training your puppy. Follow these steps below and it will surly have your dog trained in no time.

  • If your dog pays attention to the crate or even glances at the crate you need to praise them and give them a treat
  • If your puppy goes by the crate looking at it or even looks inside the crate praise them and give them a treat.
  • Next if your dog puts their paws inside the crate starting to explore more on the inside you need to praise them and give them a treat.
  • When your dog finally gets their whole body in the crate it will be a good idea to teach them a word for the crate like a cue to go inside it the next time. Also praise them and give them a treat.
  • The puppy sits or lays down in the dog crate give them praise but this time give the treat on the crate that way you’re not putting it in their mouth.
  • At this point you can give your dog meals in the crate. Now that they have done the exploring part of crate training you can start progressing more with more time inside with the door open.

The next step for crate training your dog is to keep them in there for longer periods of time. It is important once reaching this stage that you start rewarding with more praise and less treats. The only reason we say this is because if you always reward your dog with a treat they will expect it every time and will lash out when not rewarded with a treat so what you need to do is start weaning them and still giving them praise and treats just not every time.

  • Now once they lay down in the crate have them staying down longer and longer each time. For example they may lay down 30 seconds the first time well increase it next time to a minute and then two minute and so on until they get used to laying down then getting rewarded when the time is up. Remember to praise more than treats but still give them treats for the longer intervals.

Now once you have reached a good interval session for a few days it will be time to finally close the door to the dog crate.

  • Close it and then instantly open it and praise them with love and a treat.
  • Next do the same thing again but this time you will do the interval test again when you have them lay down and then close the door for 30 seconds to one minute to two minutes and so on. Do this for a few days and complete this phase.
  • The next step will be doing the exact same thing except now you will actually latch the door instead of just closing it.

Now that you have completed those crucial steps it is now time to start latching the door and you walk away to actually begin what is known as crate training.

  • The first step in this process is to have your dog lay down shut the door to the crate and latch it and walk away one step backwards. Then come back and open the door and reward with a treat.
  • Now this time you will want to do this a couple times taking steps further away from the crate and coming back. Do this until you and your dog feel comfortable before going on to the next step.
  • The next step is to leave for longer periods of time such as 10 minutes, 20 minutes, and 30 minutes. Start this and see how they feel with different times them being in the crate with you in the room and some without you there.
  • The final step in the process is to move the crate in different positions of the house. That way they can learn to deal with distractions while in their dog crate. Move to different rooms even outside and even in the car to get a feel for different surroundings around their crate.

How To Crate Train Your Puppy During The Night:

Do not try crate training your dog at night until you have successfully crate trained your dog during the day with the following steps wrote about above. This will only work if they have been in the crating process before and they are used to it. One of the main things is to not react to when your dog is whining or crying at night. It’s just like with a baby during the night sometimes you let them cry it out to have them go back to sleep. Same thing with your puppy, you can’t go to their rescue every minute or they will always do that.

The best way to get your dog to sleep min their crate is to put them in there when their tired and ready for bed. Usually when you put them in their crate they will lay down and eventually fall asleep so always put them in the crate when they are tired. Depending on how old your puppy is will determine if they can hold their bladder through the night. If your puppy is under 12 weeks old they will need to be taken out at night to use the bathroom. Their bladders aren’t big enough to hold all that pee. You should take your dog out in 3 hour intervals to use the bathroom.

Lastly most people buy two crates one for their house and the other just for their bedroom. This way every night your dog will be able to smell and hear you which will make them feel safer. This will not disrupt the crate training process this will just make it easier for them during the night. You still don’t want to respond to their cries or whining to teach them to stay in their crate. If it is a young puppy only respond to the bathroom whines and get them used to the routine of potty training. Crate training will help with training your dog how to use the bathroom outside!

Crating An Adult Dog V.S. Puppy Dog:

Generally an adult dog that already has a routine they are used to will be much harder to crate train but it is possible and may people have done it! An adult dog will be harder to teach because they forget things quicker than a puppy would, although puppies have to be reminded over and over again. See when your dog is a puppy everything is new for the, and they have no routine or habits until you give them some. So it’s much harder to get an older dog to learn a new routine. It will be a fight but you will succeed in crate training adult dog it may just be harder than crate training a puppy.

How To Crate Train An Adult Dog:

The first step in getting an older dog to crate train is to let them learn at their own pace. You don’t want to ever force them where they feel scared to go in the crate every time. You want to create a happy inviting crate for your dog to go in.  especially if your dog is adopted you have no idea what they have gone through before they could have had a bad experience with crating and could be scared at first to go in the crate.

Once your dog gets used to the crate you can finally start the crate training process. Now you will do the exact same steps as we wrote above just as you would if you had a puppy. Now remember these steps might take longer with an adult dog. Just give them time and keep practicing. You got through the hard step getting them used to it and now you just have to practice a routine with them.

How to Stop the Whining In the Dog Crate:

Whining is a difficult task to break once it starts. You don’t want to acknowledge your dog’s whining because then they will know it gets your attention and they will continue to do it. Some people think it’s not good for a puppy to be left alone in a crate but it’s actually better to train them at a young age that way they don’t have behavior issues. Of course it is important to not use this crate as a punishment for your dog. Check the signs if you’re in doubt; do they need to use the bathroom? Are they hungry? Is the crate comfortable? Ask yourself these questions before you go running to your dog, if these things have been done then leave your dog alone and he will eventually stop!

How to Stop the Barking In the Dog Crate:

Dogs barking can happen for numerous different reasons and we aren’t going to get into every reason but we want to be aware of why they might be barking in their crate. One reason of course the main reason could be they don’t like the crate and they want out because you put them in there. We need to be aware of the other possibilities as well. Barking from your dog could also be perceived as an alarm to warn us from danger. It could be warding off an intruder by the house or even fear of seeing someone. Whatever the reason may be we want to be aware of different barks that come from our dogs.

If you know your dog is just barking because they want out of their cage try the bark on command rule. This will allow you to teach your dog to bark only when told to. Just like the saying goes speak dog. After the dog speaks on command give them a treat. I know what this sounds like but you are actually training your dog not to bark. He’s being rewarded for being quiet instead of barking and only barking on cue.

Another thing you can do is cover the crate with a cloth’ this will allow your dog to start barking because he’s barking at stuff he sees. If he can’t see things that will distract him he will stop barking. Sometimes if you bring the crate into your bedroom at night they will stop barking as long as their close to you.

How to Stop Your Dog from Pooping In The crate:

If your dog has consistently been popping in their crate there are a few things you need to look for. You really want to make sure you have the right size crate. If the crate is to big the dog will soil their crate every time. Your dog should have enough room to stand up, turn around, and lay down. If there is extra room when they lay down it’s too big. In your dog’s mind they are thinking one side of the crate to sleep on the other to poop on. If your dog is a puppy you really should buy the crate dividers which allow them to have a smaller space until they reach adult hood.

Another reason they could be soiling their crate is because they are not on a consistent potty schedule. Anytime you put your dog in a crate you need to take them to the bathroom right before and then when you wake up they need to be taken to the bathroom right away.  If you have a puppy usually after a puppy eat or drinks they have to use the bathroom 20 minutes later so wait for that before you put them in their crate.

Now if all of these tips still aren’t working for you and your dog then I would seek medical help. Apparently there is a larger issue with your dog if they keep soiling their crate. Remember to not let your dog sit in their soiled crate for long because it can lead to other medical issues that you don’t want to be a part of.

Important Things To Remember When Buying A Crate for Your Dog

When shopping for a dog crate, there are several points to consider. Your dog should be safe and comfortable every time.

1. Material

The right material is a factor to consider. The weight and height of the dog are the determining factors. Never go for the appearance every time. It can be deceiving. Heavyweight dogs need a heavy gauge steel crate to accommodate their weight.

For the small animals, you can choose the lightweight dog crate. Some canvas material may not withstand abuse. These little ones can break the mesh too. Durability should be the deal for your money. Buy quality and avoid disappointment.

2. Safety

If a crate doesn’t lock safely or your dog can break out of the box don’t buy it. How sturdy is the crate? Are the edges smooth? Is the floor comfortable for your dog? These are the questions you should ask from your store before purchase.

The balance of the crate should be firm and be able to withstand abuse. Rough edges and uncomfortable floors will hurt the dog. The pans should be changeable or easy to clean. Always keep your pet safe and clean.

3. Right Size

Get the correct size of your dog by measuring him from the top of his head to the floor also from the tip of the nose up to the base of the tail. The height and width of the crate should be 1-2 inches taller than the pet. The allowance gives the dog enough space to turn around, sit, stand or lay down. Final Thoughts

A dog is man’s best friend. The care and protection you give your pet should be quality and timely. Your dog’s crate should be pleasant and if adjustable make it the right size. There are many dog crates in the market, and the best dog crate depends on the size and weight of your dog. Most of the crates are easy to assemble and collapse for ease of movement.

When you crate train, you need to do it gradually. Try to call the dog over to the crate with a treat and an instruction command. When the dog goes inside the crate give it another treat. You can let it out but make it routine until the dog is used to the crate. Many people have welcomed this new idea of training dogs.

It may be difficult at the beginning, but the results are excellent when your dog adapts. You should not feel guilty for putting your dog in a crate. Dogs are den animals, and crates are the best house training tools.
