Schnauzer Yorkie Mix History

For many designer breeds, it is unknown when the parents of the breed were first bred together. Likely the Schnauzer Yorkie mix was the result of accidental breeding that turned into something great.

This probably happened during the designer mixed breed craze in the 1990s when celebrities and everyone else were trying to create new breeds.

Since we don’t know much about the history of the Snorkie, I will give you some information about the parents of this mix.

Minature Schnauzer

The Schnauzer originated in Germany, where it was used as a ratting dog and guard dog of livestock on farms. The history of this breed dates back in books and pictures to the 14th century.

It wasn’t until the 1880s that Georg and Heinrich miniaturized the Schnauzer breed. Both the standard and miniature version lived on farms and continued to work.

In the late 1800s, the first miniature Schnauzer was recognized by Germany’s Kennel Club. The breed eventually came to American and was recognized here in the late 1920s.

Yorkshire Terrier

The Yorkshire Terrier, or Yorkie for short, was originally created to be a rat-catching dog in cotton mills. This breed hails from the country of Yorkshire, which is located in England.

Eventually, after many years of working in mines and factories, noblewoman noticed the breed and adopted it as a lap down. This of course, made the breed extremely popular across the United Kingdom.

The breed made its way to the United States in the 1870s. After a few years, the breed got accepted into the American Kennel Clun in 1875, and it was classified into the toy group.

Today the Yorkshire Terrier is one of the most popular dog breeds. It is an excellent companion lap dog.

Snorkie Size

This is a very small lap dog that will not get bigger than 15 pounds. Males can weigh between 8 to 12 pounds and span 5 to 12 inches.

The females can weigh between 7 to 11 pounds and will span 4 to 11 inches. Just remember, each dog is different, so yours could be a little over this range.

Just remember if your dog is well over this weight limit that you consult your veterinarian to see if your dog is becoming overweight.

Snorkie Health Problems

The average Snorkie can enjoy a long life of up to 15 years if it is cared for properly. This dog is a healthy dog and one of the dogs that suffers from very few health problems.

Even though this mix will be rather healthy, you should still be aware of certain health conditions your dog could possibly inherit.

Pancreatitis – This is a condition where the pancreas gets very swollen and even inflamed. This part of the dog is what helps your dog process blood sugar and digest food. Your dog will need to see a veterinarian to get a treatment for this.

Diabetes – Diabetes is a very manageable disease that can be controlled. One way to keep your dog’s disease managed is by feeding your dog a special diet, good exercise, and insulin injections.

Hypoglycemia – This is also another form of low blood glucose. A veterinarian can show you how to manage this condition.

Just remember we are not saying your dog will get any of these conditions. These are just a few that are possible from the Schnauzer parent breed.

Life Expectancy of a Schnauzer Yorkie Mix

The Schnauzer Yorkie mix can live between 12 and 15 years. If your dog is fed a really good diet and gets plenty of exercise, then your dog will likely live in this expected life range.

Some dogs may even live longer; it will truly all depend on genetics.

Living Conditions

Snorkies are great dogs to keep inside an apartment as they are small and do not make a lot of mess. It is not appropriate to have these dogs as outdoor pets as they are so small and fragile.

Additionally, it is not advisable to keep these dogs if you live in a hot climate as they are very sensitive to the heat.

Snorkie Exercise

The Snorkie needs thirty minutes of exercise each day. You can break this exercise requirement into two fifteen-minute sessions.

Although this is a small dog, it enjoys going for long walks in the outdoors and is likely to try and make friends with every other dog in the park.

It also is a dog that likes to play games, and giving the dog different toys will stimulate it, so it doesn’t grow bored.

Your Schnauzer Yorkie mix can be very yappy at times. This will be because of the lack of exercise and attention your dog is getting.

Schnauzer Yorkie Mix Feeding

Feeding will all depend on the size of your Schnauzer Yorkie mix. If your dog is on the smaller side, taking after the Yorkshire Terrier parent, then your dog may only need 1/2 a cup of high-quality dog food.

If your dog is bigger, weighing more then you can feed your dog one cup of food per day. This can be in the form of dry dog food or wet food. Some owners make a mix to help with the smaller dog breeds teeth.

Depending on the quality, you choose you can expect to spend between $.30 to $1.00 a day on food.

Remember to break up the food into smaller meals that way, your dog doesn’t develop bloat or get hungry later with no food left to give.

Small dog breeds do have a tendency to become overweight so keep that in mind. Please do not feed your dog unnecessary food that will make them obese.

Snorkie Grooming

Since this breed has such shaggy hair, these dogs do require regular grooming and a good brushing 2-3 times a week.

Since the hair is quite long, it will need to be brushed often just to contain the knots, mats, and tangles. A good quality detangling spray can help when grooming out knots.

It is also advisable to have the hair around their eyes trimmed as it can grow notoriously long and obscure the dog’s view.

The dog will need to be bathed weekly if your dog takes on more of the traits of the Yorkie. If your dog takes on the coat of the Schnauzer more then baths will only have to be done bi-weekly to monthly.

Always have the nails trimmed down to an appropriate amount. A groomer can do this for you easily.

Schnauzer Yorkie Mix Training

The Schnauzer Yorkie mix can actually be quite difficult to train. This mix can be very stubborn making training tough. A firm hand and alpha can successfully train the Snorkie.

Without a strong alpha, your dog may not listen and get bored with training putting you basically back to square one. If training gets too hard for you, you can always outsource it and sign your dog up for obedience and dog training.

When training, always praise your dog with treats and positive reinforcement. If you can start training your dog from the time it is a puppy to adulthood.

Snorkies are naturally good watchdogs, so you can train your dog to use this skill to protect yourself. Even though this is a small dog breed, someone might think you have a bigger dog in your house.

Suitability

This is an ideal pet for any kind of person who does not mind having a dog inside.

It is a great companion for families and older people but with really small children, care needs to be taken as the Snorkie, especially puppies, can be fragile.

Schnauzer Yorkie Mix Puppies

The first step when acquiring any type of dog is to do your research. If you want a puppy, you need to look for a reputable breeder that you can trust to deliver you a healthy puppy.

Many puppy mills sell these special designer breeds, but they should be avoided at all costs. Spend the extra money and get a Schnauzer Yorkie mix from a breeder that can show you health papers on all their dogs.

Since this is a designer dog breed, you may pay more than other mixed breeds. The Schnauzer Yorkie mix will cost between $500 and $1,000. Some breeders may even charge more it really all depends on what their reputation is and the bloodlines of the parents.

Make sure you do your research and don’t just pick the first breeder you see. Ask questions and interview the breeder, then make your decision.

If you don’t necessarily need a puppy, then you can always check rescues as they may have a Schnauzer Yorkie mix looking for a good loving home. This will also be a cheaper way to acquire a dog you are looking for.
